Stainless Steel vs Sterling Silver Jewellery: How to Choose

Gold-plated Sculpted Knot Cuff with an intertwined centre and open ends

Stainless steel and sterling silver can both belong in a considered jewellery wardrobe. The useful question is which material, finish and design suit the way you dress and the care you are happy to give a piece.

Separate the metal from the finish

A product has a base material and may also have a surface finish. Gold plating describes a finish; it does not mean the whole piece is solid gold. Likewise, a silver-coloured piece might be stainless steel or rhodium-plated sterling silver. Look at the material line in the product details rather than deciding from colour alone.

Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver, with other metals making up the remainder. Stainless steel is a different alloy, based on iron and containing chromium. A polished photograph cannot reliably distinguish them.

Where each fits in the collection

ATELVI’s Luxe selection includes stainless steel designs with sculptural shapes and polished surfaces. The Sculpted Knot Cuff illustrates that visual direction: one pronounced knot that can finish a plain shirt or sleeveless outfit.

The Sterling Silver Edit focuses on 925 sterling silver pieces, with gold-plated or rhodium-plated finishes specified on individual listings. Browse sterling silver earrings when you want to compare smaller details and delicate designs.

Compare the actual piece, not just the category

  • Shape: a broad cuff makes a different statement from a small stud, regardless of metal.
  • Dimensions: check length, width and fit rather than estimating from a close-up photograph.
  • Finish: decide whether you want a warm gold colour or a cooler silver finish.
  • Construction: consider the fastening and whether you can comfortably put it on yourself.

Weight and comfort depend on a design’s size and construction as well as its material. Do not assume every steel piece is heavy or every silver piece is light. If a weight is not listed and it matters to you, ask before choosing.

Care still matters

Plating is a surface layer that can wear with use and friction. Follow the care instructions for the finish and any stones, rather than treating every piece as bare metal. ATELVI recommends a soft, dry, untreated cloth and removing jewellery before swimming, showering and exercise.

Read the materials and finishes guide alongside the individual product details. Choose the design you will enjoy wearing, then check its fit and care requirements before ordering.
